The Story

About This Space

The Westhaven kitchen earns the word contemporary through material specificity rather than restraint alone. This is a kitchen that commits to its contrasts: warm Alder wood against dark Forged Steel, leathered quartz with genuine texture against the clean flat faces of the cabinetry, elongated wall tile that reads as architectural cladding against the precision of the Schluter trim at every edge.

Alder cabinetry in a Nutmeg stain with Notable Series doors provides the kitchen's warmth at the perimeter and shelving positions. Nutmeg is a rich, golden-brown stain that brings out the grain of Alder without pushing it toward rustic: it reads as warm and considered, the kind of wood tone that photographs well at every time of day and looks better after years of daily contact. Custom shelf brackets give the open shelving program a handcrafted quality that standard shelf hardware cannot match. Paint-grade cabinetry in Forged Steel at the island and bar accent positions introduces the kitchen's dark contrast: a deep charcoal that grounds the composition and prevents the warmth of the Nutmeg from reading as soft.

Two leathered Mikado quartz surfaces provide the countertops. Siberia White Leathered on the perimeter is a white quartz with a texture that catches light in a way that polished quartz cannot, creating a surface that reads as both refined and genuinely tactile. Wet Concrete Leathered on the bar island is a cooler, concrete-toned surface that echoes the kitchen's dark cabinetry accents while staying in the same material family as the countertops above it. The decision to use two different leathered quartz colors within the same kitchen is the design move that makes the kitchen genuinely unique: not a matching set, but a coordinated pair.

Filetto Camel Ceramic wall tile in an 18 x 47 format with Mapei Mocha grout covers the kitchen and bar walls. At nearly four feet tall, the tile reads as wall cladding scaled to the room rather than a backsplash detail. Mapei Mocha grout in a tone that warms the Camel tile body without contrasting it gives the wall surface an organic continuity. Schluter Jolly Tredline TSB Beige provides the trim at every edge transition, completing the tile installation with the precision that a contemporary material program requires.

Common Questions

Questions Homeowners Ask About This Space

What is leathered quartz?

Leathered finish quartz has a textured, matte surface created by running the slab through a process that creates small peaks and valleys in the stone, similar to the texture of leather. It hides fingerprints and watermarks better than polished quartz, has a more tactile, organic quality, and reads as sophisticated without being reflective. In a contemporary kitchen with wood and dark cabinetry, leathered quartz connects the warmth of the wood to the countertop surface without the formality of a polished stone.

What is Filetto Camel tile?

Filetto Camel is a ceramic wall tile in an 18 x 47 inch format with a warm, elongated profile that reads as contemporary and architecturally scaled. At this size, the tile functions as wall cladding rather than traditional backsplash tile, creating a surface with the presence of a material rather than a pattern. The Camel colorway is a warm, mid-tone beige that bridges Alder Nutmeg cabinetry and Forged Steel accents without competing with either.

What is Forged Steel cabinetry?

Forged Steel is a deep charcoal grey paint color for cabinetry that reads as dark and grounded without the starkness of true black. In a kitchen with warm Alder Nutmeg wood cabinetry, Forged Steel on the island and bar accent positions creates the contrast that gives a contemporary kitchen its visual depth. It is a color that photographs well, ages well, and does not require maintenance anxiety.
