The Pantry at Our Seward Hall Refined Cottage Kitchen Remodel

Sebring Design Build designed the butler's pantry at this Franklin, Tennessee cottage kitchen remodel with Marketplace Recessed Panel cabinetry in both Stone and Mourning Dove, MSI Calacatta Monaco quartz counters, custom black metal and glass open shelving, and Aspen hardware in Silicone Bronze Light. A working room that carries the kitchen's material language without repeating it.

The Story

About This Space

The butler's pantry is where the Seward Hall program gets to be less careful. It uses the same Marketplace Recessed Panel door style as the kitchen and the same pair of finishes, Stone and Mourning Dove, but here the two colors appear together in a single room rather than divided between perimeter and island. Slab top drawers over recessed panel doors keep the cabinetry consistent with the main kitchen, so the pantry reads as part of the same build rather than a separate project.

Counters are MSI Calacatta Monaco quartz, the same soft white surface that runs the kitchen perimeter. Keeping it continuous through the pantry was deliberate. The counter is the one element the eye can follow from one room into the next, and holding it steady lets the cabinetry colors do the work of distinguishing the two spaces.

The custom shelving is what makes the room. Black metal frames with glass shelves, two shelves at 12 inch spacing, 8 inches deep and 84 inches wide, give the pantry a long horizontal band of open storage for glassware and serving pieces. Glass shelves keep the wall behind them visible and the whole assembly light, while the black metal picks up the darker tone of the Mourning Dove cabinetry below. Aspen knobs and flat sided pulls in Silicone Bronze Light finish the room in the same warm, slightly aged metal used throughout the kitchen.

Common Questions

Questions Homeowners Ask About This Space

What is a butler's pantry?

A butler's pantry is a secondary prep and serving space adjacent to the kitchen, typically holding counter space, closed storage for serving pieces, and open shelving for glassware. In this Franklin, TN remodel it takes the same cabinetry and counters as the main kitchen, so it works as an extension of the room rather than a closet.

Should a pantry match the kitchen cabinetry?

Matching the door style is what holds the two rooms together. This pantry uses the same Marketplace Recessed Panel profile and the same two finishes as the kitchen, but combines Stone and Mourning Dove in one room instead of separating them. The result reads as continuous without being a copy.

Why use glass shelves on open shelving?

Glass keeps an 84 inch run of shelving from reading as a solid mass. Light passes through, the wall stays visible, and the black metal frame is the only part that registers visually, which suits a pantry where the contents are meant to be seen. At 8 inches deep the shelves hold glassware and serving pieces without crowding the counter below.
